WASTE WATER CONTAINMENT – East Helena, MT

PROBLEM: Contain a large amount of contaminated industrial process water necessary to run a smelter. Protect the sensitive ground water in the area.

SOLUTION: Create a large holding pond utilizing a multiple lined HDPE geomembrane containment system, Treat the water and reuse as required.

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS: A large holding basin was constructed adjacent to the smelter and various piping was installed to reticulate and treat the process water. An initial layer of 60 Mil HDPE was installed over the entire area. The next step was to install a geonet, which acts as a leak detection conduit. The last stage was to install a primary liner of 60 Mil HDPE on top of the net over the secondary layer. Both layers of liner material were hot wedge welded, air pressure tested seams and documented seam strength values. The field seams were tested at 750 foot intervals and samples were sent to independent laboratories daily for verification of seam strengths.
