Permeable soils are often a problem in areas where decorative ponds and lakes are constructed. In order to maintain consistent water levels for visual appeal, geomembrane liners are installed in the excavated area, and may be attached to various pipes and concrete structures to complete the lined system. In typical applications the geomembrane is buried with 12-18 inches of soil or gravel to maintain a natural look; additional landscaping with grasses, shrubs and ground covers can be placed around the pond to complete the desired visual effect. In some instances these ponds have secondary uses such as a storm water pond, or fire water reservoir.
