Nisqually Kalama Creek Hatchery – Olympia, WA

Case Study: REPLACE POND

Problem: An existing fish hatchery pond is at the end of life and an alternative is needed for replacement. There are several types of geomembranes that could be used to cover the original asphalt
pond.

Solution: A specialized Bituminous membrane for waterproofing hydraulic structures was chosen as the best fit for this hatchery application. Coletanche geomembranes are designed to preserve natural resources and build a better future. This unique liner manufactured in France is composed of 6 layers from top down: sand, sbs modified bitumen, non-woven geotextile, glass fleece, sbs modified bitumen, and an anti-perforation film which is compatible with asphalt protection.

Construction Details: The same expectation with subgrades for any geomembrane installation is required for Coletanche installation. Once subgrade is accepted, position and unroll Coletanche ES2 liner
into place. The terphane film should be in contact with the subgrade and removed prior to welding. Coletanche welding should be performed by an authorized installer of Axtar Coletanche products.
According to specifications quality control should be performed using visual inspection and compressed air lance. Additional testing could include vbox and ultrasound testing. Termination detail for this installation included SS 316 Batten and hardware and bituminous coating alternative from North America.
