Geosynthetic Clay Liner consists of a 1/8 inch of bentonite clay bound between two layers of geotextile. The geotextile layers are held together by sewing of seaming patterns. The geotextile layers vary in weight depending upon the demands of the installation. The clay swells when exposed to liquids, thus sealing in the event an item has punctured the GCL. Since GCL’S have low chemical resistance and are not 100 percent impermeable, they are used a secondary containment liners in landfills or waste water ponds. They are not tolerant to UV exposure. GCL’s can hydrate if stored in an uncontrolled environment too long and can become brittle if not installed correctly.
