Canals are used to transport water or other liquids from a source to a destination. In most cases, the canals are used to transport water from a river, lake or spring downhill to farms and ranches for their use as irrigation water. Most canals run across hillside slopes, leaving one side of the canal downhill and exposed. Water seepage weakens the canal berms and can result in a washout, causing interruptions in water service and costly repairs. It is common for canals to be concrete, these can develop cracks and separated joints over time; an impermeable liner over the concrete canal is a cost effect solution to the problem. An impermeable liner not only protects the canal structurally but offers the best results in conveying the maximum amount of water to the various destinations with minimal loss. The most common impermeable liners used in canal linings are HDPE, PVC, and Reinforced Polypropylene.
